Sakaye ‘Nicki’ Yamada (nee Miyagishima)
November 12, 1932 – January 24, 2014

After living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years, Sakaye ‘Nicki’ passed away peacefully on January 24, 2014.

Sakaye is survived by her loving children and grandchildren, Brenda (Grant) Shikaze – Jeffrey, Kevin and Cameron; Gary (Sabrina) – Brendan, Ethan and Estella; Darcy (Fay) – Kiki and Robbie; and Laurie (Duncan) Knoll – Mathew, Dillon and Jocelyn. She is also survived by her oldest brother Takashi ‘Taxi’ Miyagishima, her sister-in-law Kay Miyagishima and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband and soul-mate in 2012, Tatsuo ‘Tom’, her parents Ushikichi and Tatsu, her sister Shizuye ‘Shiz’ Sugiyama, and brothers Noboru ‘Nobby’ and Tamotsu ‘Tom’. Sakaye balanced a long and dedicated career as a legal secretary, while enthusiastically raising her family. We will miss her smiling face, infectious laugh, love of family and her passion for hockey, the Edmonton Oilers, golf and Beanie Babies’ collectibles. Her adventurous and positive outlook resulted in many trips with Dad/Grandpa and was an example for us all. We all have lasting memories of her and Dad/Grandpa gliding across the dance floor together, and know they will be dancing together again. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to her dedicated caregivers at McConnell Place West and the compassionate 3LP team at Capital Care Lynnwood.

A family memorial service will be held for Sakaye on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (10531 Kingsway Ave, Edmonton, Ab T5H 4K1).

To send condolences or to share a memory, tribute or photo, please visit www.glenwoodmemorial.com.
