It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother following a courageous battle with cancer. Cheryl was a kind, gentle and loving person who touched the lives of many.

Cheryl was born in Lethbridge and raised in Wrentham, Alberta. She moved to Edmonton in 1965 where she raised her family and continued her nursing career. Cheryl was a dedicated and hard-working Registered Nurse who loved working at her “dream job” as an Operating Room nurse for over 20 years at the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital. Cheryl made many friends at work and always came home with great stories and laughs from her time at work with her friends and colleagues.

She had many precious friendships outside of work as well. After her retirement, she was able to enjoy fun times with her wonderful friends on many shopping trips, innumerable lunch dates, ice cream trips, and movie nights. Despite her health challenges, the last year of her life was probably one of her best as she felt so grateful to be so loved and appreciated by her many friends.

Above all else, Cheryl was a devoted mother and grandmother. She always put her children first and showed them unconditional love and unwavering support. With her gentle, quiet guidance, she allowed her children to develop the confidence to pursue their own paths in life and stood by as a constant cheerleader. She will be forever cherished and missed by her four children; David (Michelle), Michelle (Jordy), Greg (Stacy), and Mark (Carolyn).

In addition to being an amazing mother, “Granny” will always have a special place in the hearts of her eight grandchildren (Claire, Olivia, Miles, Owen, Jack, Kate, Blake and Ryan). She loved spending time with all of her grandchildren and they will remember her for her fun, gentle spirit, for making them feel special, and especially for the many “granny treats” and her funny sayings.

We would like to sincerely thank all of the health professionals that we encountered throughout Cheryl’s health challenges. The physicians, staff, and volunteers at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton were always forthright, kind and compassionate.

The Sherwood Park Home Care nurses were exceptional in their care and monitoring of Cheryl’s condition. Dr. Trent Dusang was truly a gift and we are so incredibly grateful for his willingness to take over her care and guide us through the final stages of her life. Finally, the staff on 9Y Mel Miller Hospice at the Edmonton General Hospital provided thoughtful and compassionate care to Cheryl and to our family members in her last days.

A memorial service and reception will be held on Friday, August 28th at 1:30pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 2090 Sherwood Drive in Sherwood Park. A private burial ceremony will follow for family members.

Those who desire may donate in memory of Cheryl to the Cross Cancer Institute.
