The family returned to Germany in March of 1939. In 1945 the family fled from East Germany to the West before the border was well defined. They travelled with horse and buggy for several days and even during the night so as not to be detected. Once the escape was made they settled for about 8 years near Hamburg where August worked as a farm hand and later was learning the trade as a shoemaker. In August of 1953 the family immigrated to the Frobisher, Saskatchewan area. In September 1956 they bought a farm south of Frobisher, SK. August worked at various jobs in Frobisher including 9 years for CN Rail as well as on the family farm south of Frobisher. In April 1974 he and his mother moved to Edmonton, Alberta.
