I was born in Broadview, Saskatchewan on Dec. 19, 1925, to parents Jacob and Christine Urschel, who were born in Austria and had immigrated to Canada. My five siblings are Mary Trithart (nee Urschel, predeceased in Feb 4, 1970), Elsie Urschel (92), Ernie Urschel (89) Minnie Jolly (nee Urschel) (84) Wilfred Urschel (79). We were raised in Saskatchewan, good roots, hard-working grain farmers, a family of faith. What a wonderful thing! At our Dad’s request we were all Bible College graduates.
It was difficult to let go of this earthly home, yet I was eager to meet my Saviour Jesus Christ. I slipped away peacefully on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 2:15 pm in the presence of family members. I was so looking forward to going 'Home' and yet comforted because of the wonderful care and encouragement at Laurier House from Dr. Aradi, the nursing staff, and loving volunteers. I am thankful for my friends and my buddy Clara’s endless love and support. During my finale days, it was wonderful to be surrounded by my children and grandchildren, and speak to the other family members from a distance, through telephone and Skype.
Ah ... time has gone by so quickly.
I remember as a young man falling in love with the love of my life, Viola Mary Ingrid Hammerstrom (twin sister of Violet) and marrying October 28, 1950. We were blessed with four wonderful children, Gerry Carl, Brenda Mae, Wendy Fae. and Perry Mark.
In addition to farming, I worked as a mechanic for Schlamps Auto Shop in Grenfell. In 1964 I took my family on a new adventure and moved to Ignace, Ontario to work for Trans Canada Pipelines. Moose country, pickerel fishing, beautiful lakes, cold winters, but warm hearted friends.
Ignace became home for our family. Wendy and Jeff Hagar married in 1979 and soon after Matthew Todd and Sarah Jane came along. Perry and Dawn (nee Wesley) married in 1982, and they were blessed with Chad Wesley and Samantha Jade. Brenda married Andrew Clark in 1988 into a ready made family with Michelle, Sharlynn and Vance. Alysha Viola was born in 1990.
I enjoyed my grandchildren’s weddings, Michelle, Sharlynn, Sarah Jane and Reuben Zuidhof, Matt and Jodie Hagar, Alysha and Scott Hachey, Chad and Amy Urschel. I was blessed to enjoy five great grandchildren, Alex, Brynn, Braven, Jacob (named after my Dad) and Camden.
When I retired from Trans Canada Pipelines, Viola and I moved to Alberta. In spring of 1989 Gerry was killed in a mining accident in Ignace, and Viola lost her battle with cancer. It was difficult time, but God gave me His peace and comforted our family through the loss. I am now looking forward to meeting them in Heaven.
I was thankful for Perry and Brenda to have their families in Sherwood Park and for the rest of my loving family across the country. My greatest joy was to be around my grand-children and great grand-children. I was also grateful for the support of my Park church family for the past 25 years.
My hope is in the Lord. This is the day that the Lord has made and I WILL rejoice and be glad in it! Pslam 1:18:24
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4

A private Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. till 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service on March 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at The Park Pentecostal Church located on 1 Brower Drive in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl Urschel’s memory may be made to Sew on Fire Ministries, 240 Applevale Court, Burlington ON L7L 2B9 (sewonfire.com) or The Park Pentecostal Church, 1 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park, AB T8H 1Y7 (theparkchurch.ca)
