Margaret (Peggy) Joyce Melmock passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 while doing something she loved -- visiting family on Vancouver Island. Peggy was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on January 22, 1929 to Harry and Adelaide Craven. She grew up in the Edmonton area and spent many happy childhood summers with her Grandma Leslie at Chip Lake. She was a provincially acclaimed speed skater as a teen and took up the teaching profession in her early 20’s. Her lifelong love of travel was sparked when she taught in Bermuda in the early 1950’s before returning to Alberta to meet and marry Raymond Melmock (formerly Mylymok).

After living in Calgary and Edmonton, Peggy and Ray spent many busy years raising their family and being part of the community of Whitecroft outside Sherwood Park, Alberta before taking early retirement and moving to Antler Lake. After Ray’s death in 1994, Peggy eventually moved to Great Oaks Village in Sherwood Park where she spent nearly two decades making her home the center of activity for family and friends. In her later years, she enjoyed the friendship of the late Bill Kasting and her constant travelling partner the late Wendy Griffin. The list of friends and associates who helped her enjoy her life as a teacher at Mills Haven School and as an avid tennis player, swimmer and horseback riding enthusiast is as rich and colorful as a prairie sky at dusk.

Peggy’s fun-loving and indomitable spirit and her generous nature will be deeply missed by her three children Robin, Seth and Amy and by their spouses, Michael Mountford, Danielle Melmock and Craig Wood. She is fondly remembered and greatly missed by grandchildren Reade, Quinn, Tess, Kathleen and Adam, Stephanie and Raena, and by great-grandchildren Abbagail Rose and Aeva.

Peggy cared deeply for her relatives from coast to coast, including her brother Donald Craven and his wife Peggy, and her nephews Aaron, Lauren and Darren, her brother-in-law William Mylymok and his wife Joyce and her nieces and nephews Tara, Spencer, Clinton and Jeremy. She will live on in the memories of Jeanne Walters and Bonney, Terry and Lesley Hoknes and her sister-in-law Jackie and her niece Kim, and her cousins Rosella and Betts. The Jeffries family in PEI mourn her passing, as do her many close and devoted friends and former teaching associates in Alberta and British Columbia.

Peggy had a ready smile for everyone she met and one of her favorite expressions was “have a great time – and if you don’t, it’s your own damned fault!” She had a wonderful passion for life and a sense of humour that carried her through difficult times. She was a proud Canadian and was part of a disappearing breed who lived life to the fullest and understood the true meaning of fellowship, acceptance and forgiveness. A great admirer of talent in others, she had a rare and incredible talent for living. She was a great light and we will all miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA or to St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sherwood Park, Alberta. A memorial in celebration of Peggy’s life will take place at St. Thomas Anglican Church at 4 Raven Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18th. Peggy requested in her will that everyone in attendance wear bright colors. Internment of her ashes will take place with family at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Sherwood Park.
