Surrounded by his grandparents, uncle, and lovely friends, our dear Cohen passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his parents on Friday, January 8 at the young age of 5 years.

Cohen brought such joy, hope, laughter, and inspiration to all he met and will be deeply missed by so many friends and family. He loved Thomas the train, books, school, riding the yellow bus with his brothers and neighbours, playing outside, camping, and hanging out with his brothers, neighbourhood pets, and his adored cat, Sylvester. Cohen’s scrunchy smile, wavy blond hair and contagious giggles captivated and charmed everyone he met. He was our ray of sunshine, sparkled like no other and his motivation and drive to achieve goals and overcoming obstacles made our family and all Cohen’s cheerleaders so proud… time and time again.

He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his mother, Tammy Samoil (nee Miller); father, Lance Samoil; brothers, Carter and Everett; uncle, Todd Miller; grandparents, Ron and Helga Miller, Ken and Bev Samoil; great-grandmas, Rose Hossinger, Helen Naundorf and Alice Samoil; god-parents, Richard and Cathy Hossinger; and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbours, teachers, and therapists. Predeceased by his great-uncle, Alvin Miller; great-grandparents, Olga and Alexander Miller, Wilfred Naundorf and Marshall Samoil; and our beloved dog, Sasha.

We would like to thank all the compassionate and brilliant medical staff, doctors, surgeons, nurses, and therapists at the Stollery Children’s Hospital for their constant efforts and care for Cohen during his stays there, especially Wendy Beaudoin, Dr. Indra Dhunnoo, Dr. Ivan Rebeyka, Dr. Ian Adatia, Dr. Vivek Mehta, PICU, 4C, 4D, The Neurosurgery Kids Fund, Child Life, and pet therapists.

The celebration of Cohen’s life will be held in Sherwood Park at Glenwood Funeral Home (South of Wye Road on Range Road 232) , on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Neurosurgery Kids Fund (http://www.neurosurgerykids.com/donate.asp).
